React in case of accident

In case of an accident, you must remain calm, react quickly, and remember the three golden rules to apply:

1- Protect to avoid worsening the situation
  • Make sure all passengers, including the driver, exit the car, motor, or bicycle from the right side, and stay on the shoulder as far away as possible from the roadway.
  • Make sure all vehicles involved are turn off (battery) and that their parking brakes are engaged.
  • At night make, sure all involved vehicles are visible: e.g., high beam headlamps of another vehicle parked on the shoulder.
  • Check to see if anyone is injured. Keep your distance from the vehicle, however, and don't touch any of the people in the accident. At this point you are just trying to assess what happened.
  • Do not move an injured person unless he or she is in a burning vehicle or in other danger. Moving someone incorrectly often makes an injury worse.

2- Notify emergency services after quickly assessing the situation
  • Rescue injured people and stay calm
  • Speak in positive manner to injured victims, even if they are unconscious they can hear you and may be reassured. Cover them: injured person in a state of shock is always cold.
  • In general, avoid moving an injured person’s head.
  • Call 119. If another person stops to help, ask that person to call 119. The person calling 119 must be ready to answer questions and provide as much information as they can, such as the location of the emergency (cross streets, freeway on/off ramp information) and how many people need help (is anyone bleeding, unconscious, or without a pulse?).

3- Never
  • Give injured person fluids.
  • Take a motorcyclist's helmet off
  • Move an injured person or try to extract anyone out of a vehicle (except in extreme danger)
  • Transport a severely injured person in their car.
